I take the yearly totals for each category and divide by 12 to determine how much each category should get per month, then add all the monthly allotments together to get the $155.00 amount.

General Accounting 5/1 - 5/14

PRIMARY

budgeted:
$725.00 - rent
$70.00 - water
$160.00 - electric
$87.00 - phone/DSL package
$45.00 - ING (automatic transfer)
$25.00 - emergency fund (direct deposit)
$50.00 - life improvement fund
$50.00 - dental fund
$220.00 - groceries (includes everything)
$20.00 - K. allowance
$80.00 - gas (for 2 cars)
=========
$1532.00 - total budgeted

PAID:
$725.00 - rent
$65.00 - water
$145.00 - electric (actual was $132.80)
$87.00 - phone/DSL package
$45.00 - ING (automatic transfer)
$25.00 - emergency fund (direct deposit)
$50.00 - life improvement fund (taken out in cash; Some of that has to do with me not being the one spending it, while other parts of it has to do with being driven completely batty by my eye and not keeping a closer eye on things.

I know money was spent at the House Buyer's Fair/Seminar, but I don't know how much. I know money was spent for lunch afterward, but I don't know how much. I know I spent money on my eye exam, the shaded clip to turn the glasses I have to wear for the next week and a half into sunglasses so that I (a border-line vampire) can see at least see when I have to venture outdoors (without looking like a squinty-eyed mole-woman). I know I spent money on the eye drops I'm dropping into my right eye four times a day for the next six days. I know I spent money on... uh... stuff... while killing time in WalMart (UGH!) while waiting for my prescription to be filled.

But I have no idea where my receipts are, and I'm not entirely sure at the time of this writing (Sunday evening) exactly what I bought at WalMart (UGH!) on Friday evening. I remember lip gloss, lip stick, soap, and cotton rounds to use with my eye patch... and I know there was more, but I can't recall what!

The good news is that pay day is on the 15th, which means A.'s paycheck should be in the account come Tuesday morning when I fall out of bed.

Not being able to wear my contacts is sort of bad because it'll be almost impossible for me to drive in my glasses. The prescription is current, but I lose too much peripheral vision when wearing my glasses and it makes me a skittish driver. It's not a new situation, I've been like that since the late '80s when I started driving. What it really boils down to is that I'm not comfortable depending on glasses to see what's happening around me.

But I digress.

Finances. Um.

Oh yes.

The 15th is pay day so everything will more or less be reset anyway. I still have a few dollars left from the grocery budget for the first half of the month, and there's still a surplus in the checking account, so... despite everything that went kaboom, I guess we did ok.

Later this week (when my eyes are less irritated by smoke and crud in the air and it's less bothersome to sit staring at a computer screen because of the pink eye) I'll get to the slush fund vs. life improvement fund post.

General Accounting 5/1 - 5/14

PRIMARY

budgeted:
$725.00 - rent
$70.00 - water
$160.00 - electric
$87.00 - phone/DSL package
$45.00 - ING (automatic transfer)
$25.00 - emergency fund (direct deposit)
$50.00 - life improvement fund
$50.00 - dental fund
$220.00 - groceries (includes everything)
$20.00 - K. allowance
$80.00 - gas (for 2 cars)
=========
$1532.00 - total budgeted

PAID:
$725.00 - rent
$65.00 - water
$145.00 - electric (actual was $132.80)
$87.00 - phone/DSL package
$45.00 - ING (automatic transfer)
$25.00 - emergency fund (direct deposit)
$50.00 - life improvement fund (taken out in cash; It's insane. I sat here for a while tonight, giving everything some thought, trying to figure out what in heaven's name was going on... and I think I've finally figured it out.

Under normal conditions, I keep my car on certain days and do all the shopping during the day while A. is at work and K. is at school. However, we've not been working under normal conditions lately. Since he got back into town, A. has been using my car exclusively. He has offered to let me keep it to run errands a few times (with him either taking his car or me driving him to work), but with the extensive burns I suffered recently, driving (much less doing all the stretching and bending involved with a short woman shopping) was out of the question unless absolutely necessary. I was just in far too much pain - not to mention so extremely tired while healing - to put a shirt on my burns and go shopping. Anywhere. For anything. So A. has been driving me to this store or that one after he gets home from work.

There was one instance where we had to go back to Sam's a few days after we'd just been there because we needed water - they had been out the day we'd gone and after looking at other stores, I remembered why I normally drive over to Sam's for it (cheaper cost for higher quantity) - and it wasn't going to wait until this weekend when I had originally planned to go back for salad greens.

Another instance we went back for more menstrual pads. In that case, we're still trying out the new brand (Natracare) and didn't buy enough supplies for the month. Notation has been made on my monthly shopping needs list and that probably won't happen again. After a few months, we'll be as well stocked as we were before.

It's just little things - little adjustments - that have us looking crazy right now. Little things that don't happen or don't bother us under normal circumstances.

I guess, looking at the big picture, I can breathe a small sigh of relief that this isn't the normal trend. Anyone looking in through the small window I'm creating with this blog would surely think I'm insane, but no, that's not the case (ok, maybe, but not because of this!!). Things are just a little hectic and out of balance lately. Things will get back to normal soon, though.

Coming soon: slush fund vs. life improvement fund

Expense Accounting; New Balance

Technically, Mother's Day cards can't really be considered something that would fall under "Life Improvement", but... um... yeah. I had the cash there, and I'll make the sacrifice. The recent influx of school related expenses has completely (1) taken me by surprise and (2) drained my resources.

Also, um, technically the additional (and unexpected) expense of feeding A. and K. while at MGM on a field trip shouldn't come from the emergency fund, but the original notices said they'd be provided a bag lunch, then at the last minute we got noticed saying they needed funds for food. Wee. Seeing as how I'd already wiped out every other bit of money I could spare, I took the money from the emergency fund.
